There are all-round rods that cover a broad range of applications reasonably well, and true specialist rods with properties precisely matched to a specific lure type. In general, we distinguish between rods for use with a fixed spool reel (spinning) and rods designed to be paired with a baitcaster (casting). The main difference lies in the grip design, as baitcasting rods are almost always fitted with a trigger grip. The number of rings also differs: because baitcasters sit on top of the rod, the matching rods are equipped with more rings to prevent the line from touching the blank during the fight. Rod materials, actions, blank properties and ring configurations vary considerably between models and price categories. The following section explains what to look for when buying, so you can find the right tackle and enjoy your rod for years to come.

Buying Guide for Spinning Rods

The range of spinning rods is as broad as the number of different lure fishing methods. That makes it no easy task - for beginners, experienced anglers and seasoned pros alike - to find the right rod for the intended application from the bewildering variety on offer. Different materials, lengths, builds, actions, ring types and more all need to be considered in order to find the right rod for the job. Personal preference naturally plays an important role as well.

Your spinning rod should feel like an extension of your arm. You use it to animate the lure, feel bottom contact and detect bites. A spinning rod is casting tool, fighting machine and bite indicator all in one. You hold it in your hand for an entire day on the water, so choosing carefully really does matter.

If you feel lost among the endless options and need a way out, the following sections will give you a great deal of help in finding the rod you are looking for.

Rod Length for Spinning Rods

There is a lot of debate about the right length for a spinning rod. What is certain is that every application makes a different length appear optimal. If you own a boat and fish exclusively from it, you do not need a long rod at all. If you fish exclusively from the bank and need casting distance, you can reach for something a little longer. But which lengths actually make sense, and can a rod even be too long?

Are One-Piece Rods an Advantage?

In terms of action and bite detection, shorter rods - and ideally one-piece rods - are ALWAYS ahead. The longer the blank, the more feedback it absorbs, regardless of material. You should therefore always look for the best compromise. In the past, rods had to be long to achieve distance, so rods of three metres or more were not unusual. Thanks to modern materials, even short rods are now capable of very long casts. Modern blanks load up far more efficiently with short movements than older rods did, and the difference in casting distance between rods of different lengths is no longer as dramatic as it once was.

Long Rods for Groynes?

The argument is often made that longer rods are an advantage around rock and stone groynes to avoid snags. When you actually work this out, the difference amounts to at most a few centimetres closer to the bank. If you also hold the rod parallel to the water surface, you lose even that small advantage.

Long rods do offer a genuine advantage for lure fishing at sea, where you need to cast over waves and control the retrieve in heavy swell. This is why so-called shore rods are often 3.3 metres long.

For all other types of lure fishing, shorter rods are now the better choice. The advantages gained through extra length do not justify the drawbacks: tip-heaviness, increased overall weight and reduced feedback. When boat fishing, rods that are too long actually get in the way when landing fish and carry a greater risk of breakage when a fish runs under the hull.

The most common rod lengths therefore fall between 190 and 275 cm. The table below gives you a reference point for which rod length suits which application:

Rod Length

Application

180 - 210 cm

Vertical jigging, boat fishing, jerking, light perch fishing, float tube fishing, kayak fishing, close-range bank fishing, spoon fishing, ultra-light fishing

210 - 240 cm

Medium distances, perch and zander fishing at normal ranges, pike fishing with swimbaits, all-round length

240 - 290 cm

Distance fishing, sea trout fishing, wels catfish fishing, pike, zander and perch fishing at maximum range

Casting Weight

Every modern spinning rod carries a casting weight rating. This gives you a guide to which lure weights the rod can handle well without breaking on the cast or being underloaded. Every rod can only cover a certain range of lure weights.

A rod designed for very light lures will break on the cast when used with heavy lures. Conversely, a rod built for higher casting weights will not load properly if too little weight is hanging from the end of the line. There is no such thing as a single rod for all lures.

That said, the stated casting weight is generally only a guideline. Many rods can cast a little more than the rating suggests if you are careful with your casting stroke. Less weight than stated is almost always possible too, though without sufficient load the rod will not propel those lures very far.

Your Needs Determine the Right Casting Weight

Before buying, be clear about which lures you want to use with a rod. That decision is of course driven largely by the species you are targeting. Ultralight spinning rods have casting weights of 0.5 to 5 g. At the other end of the scale sit the heavyweights for pike, wels catfish and saltwater fishing, which can exceed a genuine 300 g. In between there are numerous casting weight ranges to suit every lure type.

Casting weights can be stated in grams or ounces (oz.). Grams will be familiar to most anglers. As for ounces: one ounce equals 28 g, so a rod rated 1/4 to 1 1/2 oz. has a casting weight range of 7 - 42 g, which you can always convert accordingly.

Material

Carbon fibre is today the standard material in rod building. It is light, stiff and strong. However, there are still considerable differences in manufacture - mainly in the quality and weave of the carbon fibre used, as well as in the resin. The quality of the construction process itself also plays a role. Carbon fibre is processed as a woven sheet, which is combined with a resin, wound around a mandrel (steel core) under high pressure and then cured. The density of the carbon fibres in the woven sheet sets the quality standard. The more tightly the individual fibres are woven, the higher the modulus of the sheet.

What Is a Cross-Weave Construction?

Some rods use sheets with different weave directions. Cross-wraps and additional weaves can also be present, so that the carbon fibres run in up to five different directions through the rod blank. Carbon fibre density is stated among other ways in tonnes - a blank made from 40t carbon fibre has a higher modulus than one made from 30t carbon fibre. You will also find IM designations used in the trade.

Blank Properties

The overall properties of the blank are determined by the material, the weave and the construction of the rod. In addition to carbon fibre, other materials such as fibreglass or aramid (Kevlar) are also used. These additions influence the rod's character. Fibreglass is slightly heavier than carbon fibre but dampens vibrations better and makes the rod more resistant to knocks and breakage. Aramid is regarded as virtually indestructible - bulletproof vests are woven from it - so aramid additions can also increase a rod's resistance to breakage.

The intended application determines which rod you need. If you want to fish soft lures for zander and perch, you need a rod that is as sensitive as possible with the best possible feedback. Such a rod is built from the highest-modulus carbon fibre with a very low resin content. These rods are extremely light and provide constant, excellent feedback on what is happening at the lure. The downside is that they are also very sensitive to knocks on the blank. Fish crankbaits on a rod like this and every vibration is transmitted unfiltered into your arm and elbow, which can become uncomfortable very quickly. In that situation, a rod with a fibreglass element is the better choice.

Rod Action

Rod action describes the taper of the blank - in other words, the relationship between the diameter at the tip and the diameter at the butt end, and the associated progression along the full length of the blank.

Classification and Rating

Rods are classified from slow (a relatively small difference in diameter) through moderate, moderate fast and fast to extra fast (x-fast, a large difference between tip and butt diameter). This action is often confused with a rod's recovery speed, but the two have nothing to do with each other. Action does, however, influence the bend curve of the rod. An x-fast rod bends predominantly in the tip section and then transitions very quickly into a stiff backbone (tip action), whereas a slow rod bends across the entire blank (parabolic action, full parabolic). Semi-parabolic actions lie in between. Which action and bend curve you prefer depends partly on the application and partly on personal taste. For jigging, a tip action is often preferred, while other anglers favour semi-parabolic (fast) rods with very fast recovery.

Recovery Speed

Recovery speed is the rod's ability to return to its straight resting position after being deflected. The faster and with less residual oscillation this happens, the faster the recovery and, in most cases, the more sensitive the feedback from the rod. During the fight, such a rod can still display a semi-parabolic or even fully parabolic action, which can be a decisive advantage when playing a fish. Rods combining a semi-parabolic bend with high recovery speed are often exceptional casters as well.

Rod Rings

The rings are an enormously important part of your rod. They guide your line and support the rod action. Rings are available in a wide range of quality levels. Important properties include heat dissipation, minimising friction during the cast, stability, weight, resistance to saltwater and resistance to tangles.

Rod Rings: Brands

Among the best-known ring manufacturers are Fuji, Seaguide, Recoil and Pacific Bay. If you find rings from these makers on your rod, you can be confident of a solid quality standard. Even within the ranges of individual manufacturers, however, there are significant differences. Suitable insert materials include SIC, Alconite, SIN, Torcite and zirconium - all of which offer good properties in terms of casting distance, line friction and line protection.

Rod Rings: Material

The material of the ring frame also matters. Titanium frames are the most expensive, but they are also extremely light and fully corrosion-resistant, making them well suited to almost any rod - though they do add to the price. Most other ring frames are made from more or less stainless steel alloys. If rods with these rings are to be used in saltwater, a little more maintenance is needed to prevent rust from forming even after years of use. These rings are also slightly heavier than titanium frames.

Resistance to modern braid is particularly important. For this reason, make sure your rod is fitted with rings from one of the quality manufacturers - that way you can be confident that the braid will not saw into the insert and cause the ring to damage the line in return.

Finally, it is worth noting that modern ring configurations typically use many smaller rings. These save weight and support the rod action optimally, as they keep the line much closer to the blank than a few larger rings would. The rods become lighter, recovery speed increases and tip-heaviness is reduced.

The Rod Handle

Whether you prefer cork or Duplon (EVA) for your rod handle is purely a matter of taste. Many anglers find the black (or coloured) grips more stylish and modern, while others prefer the classic look of a cork handle. In terms of properties, both materials are equally well suited for rod handles.

The Reel Seat

The reel seat's primary job is to hold your reel firmly in place on the rod, which most models do very reliably. It also influences how comfortable the rod is to hold. There are reel seats that are locked from above and others that are locked from below. There are also models with an exposed thread and seats whose thread is concealed by cork, Duplon or carbon. The former type can, depending on how you grip the rod, become uncomfortable over long sessions. Before buying, think about how you hold a rod and consider which reel seat suits you best - some anglers grip the rod over the reel foot, others prefer to hold it in the middle or below the reel foot. This is worth bearing in mind when making your choice.

With this short guide you should be able to find the right rod for you and your fishing method quickly.

Frequently asked questions

The faster a rod recovers, the stiffer it feels. In most cases, a faster recovery also means better feedback from the lure and the bottom. Rods intended for bottom fishing should therefore have as high a recovery speed as possible.
A spinning rod is designed for fishing with lures. It is usually matched to the target species in terms of length, casting weight and blank characteristics.
There are two main categories: classic spinning rods for fixed spool reels and rods designed for use with a baitcaster. The latter are distinguished by a higher number of rings and a reel seat with a trigger.
Classic zander rods have a fast-recovering, sensitive blank. They often have a maximum casting weight of 40 to 60 g and a length between 210 cm and 270 cm.
As a rule, casting weight, rod length and action - also known as taper - are the most important factors. The rod should also be well balanced.
The action or taper describes how the rod bends. A fast-taper rod bends only in the tip section, a medium-taper bends semi-parabolically, and a slow-taper bends all the way into the handle under load. Do not confuse the action with the rod's recovery speed.
